Workamping once again

Pittman Visitors Center
Altoona, FL

We had an uneventful ride south from Walkabout Campground
to the Pittman Visitors Center in Altoona, Florida.
It did pour down rain a couple times on the ride, but no biggie.

I noticed all the places that I've read about in others' blogs..
Salt Springs, The Yearling Trail, Juniper Springs..
We can't wait to explore all these areas.

George pulled into the driveway of the visitors center,
and we saw there were two RV sites in the back,
one already had someone in it.
I went inside and talked to Carol who was manning the VC.
She and her husband, Jim, have been workamping here for 5 seasons!
They're in charge of the visitors center.

George backed us in to our site..

This is the visitors center building..

We're surrounded by these nice oak trees hanging with Spanish moss..

After we got settled,
we were greeted by Ellis, one of the other volunteers,
Bret, the Program Manager,
and Bob, another volunteer.
We got our shirts, gloves, and supplies.
They told us that there is free WiFi to use,
and we get the use of a Forest Service truck to do our rounds.

Our job is maintenance, and we'll be driving around
picking up garbage at some of the trailheads, day use areas,
and campgrounds in the southern Ocala Forest.
We'll work 24 hours each per week, but at the same time.
Ellis is going to give us the tour of the areas on Saturday.

Both of us are looking forward to exploring what Florida has to offer!

  1. Enjoy your new "home". It looks quite nice and it sounds like there will be plenty of other volunteers to socialize with. Looking forward to hearing all about the new job.

  2. Glad you had a safe trip. We're looking forward to hearing all about your new workamping gig. Sounds like a great place!

  3. I know you will just love it there. Glad you had a good trip. Looking forward to hearing all about it.

  4. Love that area and I think you will find lots to do around there too. Enjoy Florida for the winter.

  5. We love that area of Florida and usually wind up there at least once each winter. Salts Springs was where we went kayaking with the manatees:o)) You will definitely have the opportunity to get to know that area well...we'll be interested in reading all about your Saturday tours!!

  6. You are in a wonderful part of Florida. I hope you get a chance to visit some of the beautiful Florida springs, and of course the Silver River is a beautiful place to kayak. Maybe we can meat somewhere and take a paddle or eat a meal.

  7. We are considering workamping next winter so I'll be interested to hear about your experience. Looks like a great place to be and lots to do.

  8. I love your opening photo. It sounds like a great job you've got there. We have become very bored. We would like to be workamping. But don't have anything planned until April.
